The impacts that transportation network companies, Uber and Lyft, are having on cities is certainly a hot topic — reports document a range of positive and negative impacts from increased mobility access to increased congestion. While the findings differ, they do all seem to reach the same conclusion — TNCs are changing cities.
However, courier network services such as GrubHub, Postmates, Amazon Flex, and others have largely flown under the radar despite having similar loading practices as Uber and Lyft. The ongoing growth of e-commerce combined with the ease of one-click ordering and low-cost delivery has fueled a rise in these services.
This course covers the current state of research on these services and includes a presentation by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency on their findings from two surveys conducted in late 2018. Hear about what is known thus far, what lessons were learned, and what new questions arose.
