Course Details

Housing affordability and access are always a concern for fast-growing cities. Ensuring affordability remains and that displacement is at bay safeguards the long-term sustainability of a stable economy and population as well as maintains its character and historical uniqueness. Thus, the vision, policy guidance, and development regulations under which housing is built contribute to the creation of a development environment that fosters affordability and mitigates displacement. Missing Middle Housing provides diverse housing types that fit within the scale of development around it.

This course focuses on the perspective and approach of three different cities (Charlotte, Minneapolis, and Portland) to fill the missing middle housing issue that prevails countrywide. It provides historical context, visioning process, policies, adopted regulations, challenges, lessons learned, and successes.

Learning Outcomes

• Learn the approach and perspective of three diverse cities around the country (Charlotte, Minneapolis, and Portland) to address Missing Middle Housing.
• Focus on policies and regulatory measures to help support the vision for increasing affordability and access to housing.
• Employ lessons learned and community engagement efforts to include being inclusive of a diverse population as well as navigating a political climate.
