Dynamic Downtowns at Various Scales
Course Details
These three cities are managing downtowns through three different planning exercises. In Los Angeles, the recent adoption of DTLA 2040 is now working towards implementation and Nella McOsker, the President & CEO of the Central City Association of Los Angeles will share their approach to working with public and private institutions to realize the plan’s vision.
Amanda Roman, Urban Designer for Salt Lake City, will explore how a renewed focus on livability and the adjustment of zoning regulations is paving the way for a more than two-fold increase in downtown residents within 3 years. Projects include formalizing temporary outdoor spaces through a full closure of Main Street, establishing a Green Loop to encircle downtown with an urban forest, pollinator habitat, and biking/walking corridors, and allowing additional development intensity in exchange for enhanced active street-level engagement.
Boulder, Colorado is currently working on a dozen overlapping public projects in the downtown area that address the design, function, and connectivity of urban spaces. Working with the community and teams of consultants, Brad Mueller, the city’s Director of Planning and Development Services, will speak to the city’s approach to inclusive engagement and outcomes.
