This course focuses on utilizing various GIS tools to facilitate equitable data collection, environmental hazard data visualization, and collaborative community visioning for an inclusive and equitable planning process.

Presenters offer three unique sample projects to demonstrate the effectiveness of these tools:

  • Using the Field Maps mobile app to conduct a collaborative community environmental concern inventory, mapping, and analysis for a large-scale new community plan
  • Using Data Dashboards to offer accessible and real-time environmental data for community members, including a survey of existing environmental justice tools and custom tools developed for environmental data monitoring
  • Using StoryMaps to present community environmental planning insights in an easily accessible and digestible format

A demonstration teaches how to set up a simple environmental planning dashboard using a provided GIS web map. AhaSlides Polls gauge participants’ concerns or challenges around environmental planning, followed by a discussion on participants’ experiences and thoughts. Prompts include major challenges in equitable environmental planning and using AI in environmental analysis, data, GIS workflow automation, and more.

  • Understand the unique opportunities and challenges with managing data and customizing GIS tools to support a multi-disciplinary team for high-profile, large-scale urban planning and design projects.
  • Learn about the various aspects of GIS utilized across the planning process, from inception and engagement to site assessment and future visioning.
  • Create an interactive environmental data dashboard using a provided GIS web map with prepackaged data.
