Anti-Displacement Strategies: Stories from the SBAN Network

Many communities across the country are facing gentrification in commercial districts through as a result of investor buyouts, rapid development, or speculation. Often, communities of color are most impacted by gentrification and least able to address development pressures.

To date, planners have few resources, strategies, and best practices to address small-business displacement. The Small Business Anti-Displacement Network is a national network that brings together local government officials, local CDCs, and academicians to learn from each other. 

This presentation briefly reviews 11 case studies and offers in-depth looks at two communities: the Allapattah neighborhood in Miami and District Bridges in Washington, D.C. Allapattah, a primarily Dominican-American neighborhood, has been listed in the National Trust's 11 Most Endangered Places because of gentrification pressures. District Bridges includes a diverse group of neighborhoods that have successfully created a multi-district urban Main Street program.
