In Indian country, transportation systems are the backbone of economic and community development. There are more than 570 Indian tribal governments in 35 states. A multitude of federal, state, and tribal lands impact Indian people and other United States citizens. Tribal transportation planning is a vital field of development for safe and usable roads.
This course provides data specific to federal regulations and contracts, with relevant examples of how and when tribes conduct their long-range transportation plans. Presenters share complex issues such as highway safety and how tribes can overcome accidents and human injury. They clarify federal regulations, discuss problem areas, and explain how tribes and their state and federal partners have and will overcome them. Learn how state and local transportation planning can benefit tribal transportation systems and both tribal and non-tribal travelers.

- Identify various federal regulations controlling P.L. 93-638 contracts, and program agreements between the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Federal Lands Highway program, and Indian tribal governments.
- Learn about the challenges to providing a comprehensive transportation plan for a tribal government.
- Assess state-level, long-range planning requirements that include tribal transportation planning.
