Smart City Initiatives – Lessons Learned

Course Details

As development occurs, we know how effective, or ineffective, the regulations are. Many Band-Aids — such as CUPs, SUPs, and PUDs — have been used, and new design guidelines for form standards have been written. What if this is no longer the case? What if we’re able to visualize development before it’s approved, evaluate it in its three-dimensional surroundings, and understand upfront its conformance, compatibility, and contributions to city objectives?

The recent release of ArcGIS Urban has done just that. It’s one small step for planners, but a giant leap for communities. This case study showcases how a city can leverage technology to accomplish its goals.

Learning Outcomes

  • Leverage the right technology tools to effectively research zoning and development regulations, check their potential impact, and visualize the development patterns.
  • Make informed decisions about future development patterns for code changes and other development standards.
  • Enhance coordination and increase transparency into internal decision making that encompasses multiple city departments.
