Not Your Father's GIS

Course Details

GIS tools and methodologies have radically evolved over the last 10 years, but not all planners have been able to keep pace with these technological advancements. Many are becoming less involved in managing their GIS data, developing their own maps, and synthesizing the complex issues their communities are facing. It’s time to put aside approaches and workflows developed during the 2008 heyday of ArcGIS 9.3 and move into the next generation of planning with GIS.

The presentation showcases current planning efforts nationwide. Presenters share their workflows and the tools they use to create smarter, more meaningful, and compelling plans. Tools described include ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Hub, ArcGIS Survey123, ArcGIS Business Analyst, ArcGIS Field Maps, ArcGIS Indoors, ArcGIS Urban, and ArcGIS CityEngine. Presenters explain how these tools help analyze and assess data, evaluate multiple planning scenarios, enhance public participation, and produce data-driven plan recommendations.

Learning Outcomes

  • Assess ways that planners are using new GIS tools to improve planning processes and create smarter plans.
  • Apply interactive technologies to gather, analyze, and plan with a wide range of complex datasets.
