Michael Marrella, AICP, is the Director of Waterfront and Open Space Planning for the New York City Department of City Planning. Michael is responsible for leading the advancement of waterfront policy and oversees the agency’s resiliency planning portfolio. Michael is also the chief administrator of the City’s Waterfront Revitalization Program, the City’s coastal zone management program. Michael is also the Chair of the City’s Waterfront Management Advisory Board.
Prior to becoming Division Director, Michael was the Project Director for Vision 2020, the NYC Comprehensive Waterfront Plan, released in 2011 which lays out the City’s vision for the waterfront for the next decade and beyond. Vision 2020 won numerous awards, including the Daniel Burnham Award for Comprehensive Planning in 2012 from the American Planning Association.
Michael is also on the faculty at the Hunter College and the Pratt Institute, where he has taught classes on waterfront and climate resiliency planning and has also lectured at numerous colleges and universities throughout the United States.
Michael received his Master in City Planning from MIT and a BA from Vassar College.
